Although the exact time and date of the birth of this great Saint are not identified, it is usually believed that Tulsidas was born in the year 1532 A.D. on the 7th day that is Saptami in the month of Shravana, which means monsoon.
His birth took place during the Shukla Paksha so, on this day Tulsidas Jayanti is celebrated. Which is used to refer to the waxing phase of the Moon according to the lunar Hindu calendar.
Who was Goswami Tulsidas?
Tulsidas, also referred to as Goswami Tulsidas, was a Hindu Vaishnav ( devotees of Lord Vishnu) and a well-known saint. He was renowned because of his pious devotion to Lord Rama. Although he also composed several poems and Dohas (a Doha is a couplet containing two lines, each line is made up of 24 matras aur instants).
Goswami Tulsidas was probably born in Rajapura, a town on the bank of river Yamuna, to parents Hulsi Devi and Atma Ram Sukal Dubey. It is believed that Tulsidas spent 12 months in his mother’s womb and had a full set of teeth when he was born.
After his birth, his mother died. His father gave him to the maid ‘Chunia‘ because of unwelcome. After five and a half years, maid Chunia also died. This incident made constrained to Tulsidas become orphans and wander street to street and live his life like that. He begged for alms until he was adopted by Swami Narharidas, a Vaishnavi Monk of Ramananda’s monastic order.
After his birth, the very first word he said was “Ram,” which led to him being named Rambola, which translates to one who always chants the name of Lord Ram. After receiving the Virakta Diksha, known as the Viragi, he was renamed Tulsidas.
His upanayana or the thread ceremony ( Hindu ritual celebrated to mark the eligibility of Hindu men to partake in religious responsibilities )was held by Naharidas when he was just seven years old. He started basic education in Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.
He came to the holy city of Banaras on the banks of the holy river Ganga when he was 15 to 16 years old to take knowledge about Hindu literature and Sanskrit grammar, Vedas, Vedangas, and Astronomy. Seesha Sanatana served as his guru.
His rise to glory was brought about by Ramcharitmanas, which translates to, after taking into account the plot of the story, the holy lake and the pious deeds of the Hindu God Lord Rama.
Apart from the Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas was famous for five major works, namely Dohavali, Kavitavali, Gitavali, Krishna Gitavali, and Vinay Patrika. It is also rumored that he was the one who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa.
After so many years of living his life and teaching us about Lord Ram’s story, Saint Tulsidas died in 1623 in Assi Ghat, Varanasi.

History of Goswami Tulsidas Ji
At the age of 21, he married the Bharadwaj gotra exquisite girl Ratnavali lived opposite the Yamuna river. After marriage, Tulsidas returned to his village Kashi living with the Shasnatan Ji and studying Vedas.
One day he was missing his wife so, he took the permission of his master and went to meet his wife. He reached his wife’s home in the night, but his wife was scared of public shame, and she told Tulsidas to go back to their home.
Still, Tulsidas recalcitrance for going in the home on that moment Ratnavali teaches a preach to the Tulsidas with the help of couplets.
“As much as you can love the body made with hard mass.
That much love you do with lord Ram, you will get Emancipation.”
After hearing this sentence, his inner sentience awakens, and he suddenly returns to his village. After that, he lived in his village and recited the story of Lord Ram to all people.
After some time, he went to Kashi and recited Ramkatha to all people. It is believed that Lord Hanuman himself has visited him. After meeting with Lord, Hanuman Tulsidas requested to visit Lord Raghunath. Lord Hanuman told that the Raghunath ji meet you in Chitrakut.
Tulsidas set out for Chitrakut. After reaching there, he sits on the pedestal of the Ramghat. One day he set out for Pradapshina, and he suddenly saw Shree ram. He saw that two very young charming prince riding on a horse with bows and arrows were coming.
He was well known as the author of the Ramcharitmanas, the form of Ramayana that is usually most well known for its simplified language and narration. He composed ‘Ramcharitramans’ in 2 years, 7 months, and 26 days.
Tulsidas is a common person’s poet because he helped the common person get to know about the deeds and life of Lord Ram and his life. He also founded the Sankat Mochan temple, which has now become a holy shrine of the Hindus.

We celebrate Tulsidas Jayanti in a spiritual manner. On the Tulsidas Jayanti, people collect in the temple and do the Ramayan chapter. The devotees all over the country usually read and preach the Raamcharitmanas.
Along with the preaching of the Raamcharitmanas, his Dohas and songs are also recited and sung. The temples around the world hold prayer meetings and congregations.
On this occasion of Tulsidas Jayanti, many other places organise poetry and couplet competitions. Many people participated in these events, wrote their poetry and couplet, and spoke in front of a gathering of people.
Tulsidas’ work and his life were critically acclaimed by both western and Indian Scholars and Researchers. They were in awe of the diversity of his literary pieces and his contribution to the culture of India.
Educational workshops were held to create more awareness about his work and his life. Webinars and seminars, with panels of distinguished scholars and critics, discuss his literary work. On the day of Tulsidas Jayanti various programs are also held to teach his spirituality to the citizens of today.
